Anti-Social Behaviour

A solid wooden door with the message 'All Welcome on it'. The door is locked by a padlock and chain with the phrase 'Social Media' written on the padlock.

Questions to consider...
  • Is social media your primary means of communication? What are the implications of this?
  • Has your social media use damaged your church's digital presence?
  • What does the digital experience look and feel like for those who don't use social media? (Log out and look again - or go incognito)
  • Do you see it as part of your church or a mission field?
  • What relationship do schools, colleges and universities have with social media?  Why is this?
  • Should an individual have to install an app and agree to the terms and conditions of a third party to stay connected with the church community?

Inky's Reflections...

Social media use struggles practically and ethically if it isn't missional or evangelistic.

It requires a strong understanding of the digital palette and how the choices we make have the potential to both include and exclude.

It should have..
  • Prayer cover.
  • A team approach.
  • Clarity of purpose.
  • An understanding of the benefits, dangers, settings and features associated with the chosen digital palette.
  • An awareness of how content must be managed and shaped to ensure relevance, legal compliance and fitness for purpose.
  • Regular review, refinement and training.
  • A timeframe for the activity alongside measures that can be used to evaluate outcomes.
